Somalia Celebrates Independence and Unity Day
Mogadishu – Somalia celebrated last night the 65th anniversary of the independence of the southern regions of Somalia and their unification with the northern regions on July 1, 1960.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, along with senior national army commanders and government officials, attended the national flag-raising ceremony, held annually at the Presidential Palace in Mogadishu as a symbol of the historic unification of the northern and southern regions.
President Mohamud commended the Somali people's tireless struggle for freedom and national unity, and praised the significant contributions of the northern regions to achieving independence and strengthening unity.
The President affirmed the country's continued fight against terrorism and the government's commitment to state-building and national reconciliation. He said, "This day reminds us of our shared history and the sacrifices made for a united Somalia. We must honor this legacy by working together to ensure peace, stability, and development."
National celebrations of this occasion included military and cultural parades and public events highlighting Somalia's achievements and challenges over the past six and a half decades.
