The most expensive handbag in history sells for $10 million

Fashion has set a record after the first original Hermès Birkin bag was sold at auction for $10.1 million in Paris.

People reported that the bag, which debuted in 1985, went on sale in a ten-minute auction, during which nine collectors competed, before finally settling on an anonymous buyer from Japan on July 10.

The famous bag was conceived during a casual conversation on a plane in 1981 between Jean-Louis Dumas, CEO of Hermès, and British actress and singer Jane Birkin.

The first version went on sale in 1985, after Birkin requested that the bag be named after herself.

This original bag broke two records: First, it became the second most expensive piece of costume ever sold, after the famous red shoes worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz (1939), which sold for $32.5 million in 2024.

Second, it became the most expensive handbag ever sold at auction, surpassing the Hermès Kelly 28 bag, which sold for over $500,000 in 2021.
