Somali government denies plans to deploy troops in Sanaag region
Mogadishu – The Somali government has denied rumors that it is sending military police, known as "Harmaad", to Sanaag region, which has been experiencing tensions these days.
The Somali government's Minister of Trade, Mohamud Adam Geisud, who is leading a high-level delegation expected to arrive in Sanaag region, stated that their mission is to assess the living conditions of the region's population.
The minister described reports of the Somali government's intention to deploy "Harmaad" forces as completely unfounded, adding that the population has the right to determine its own destiny.
Sanaag region is experiencing tension due to the conflict between Puntland, which considers the region an integral part of its territory, and local politicians, including former Puntland Parliament Speaker Abdirashid Yusuf Jibril, who are seeking to incorporate the region into the Khatama administration, which the Somali government has recognized as a federal member state.
