Las Anod - The Federal Government of Somalia welcomed the Northeastern State as the newest member of the federal system in Somalia, following a series of talks in Las Anod, the capital of Sool region.

This historic development, announced by the Ministry of Interior and Federal Affairs, was the result of a major eight-day conference in Las Anod, attended by 417 delegates from the Sool and Sanaag regions, and the city of Buhudle.

During the conference, delegates approved the interim constitution, chose a new state flag, and designated Las Anod as the capital of the newly established state. This agreement represents a significant achievement in Somalia's ongoing federal transformation process, which seeks to decentralize governance and expand political representation in line with Somalia's interim constitution.

The Ministry of Interior confirmed that, based on this decision, the state will now begin the process of electing a parliament, followed by presidential elections. It expressed its full support for the transition to the new state and emphasized the importance of inclusive governance and the peaceful process achieved so far.

Local elders, officials, and community leaders played a crucial role in leading this initiative, reflecting Somalia's continued commitment to federalism and decentralization.

Although the federal government has yet to set timelines for institutional preparation, leadership selection, and integration of the new state into national structures, the formation of the Northeastern State represents a pivotal moment in Somalia's political development. This announcement was posted on the ministry's official Twitter account, marking the formal recognition of the Northeastern State within Somalia's federal framework.
