Major League Soccer team Inter Miami confirmed that Argentine Lionel Messi suffered a "minor muscle injury" in his right leg before being substituted in Saturday's match against Mexican club Necaxa.
The British news agency PA Media reported that Messi was substituted 11 minutes into the Leagues Cup match, which Inter Miami won on penalties against Necaxa.
The American team confirmed that Messi's absence due to the injury will depend on his response to treatment.
A club statement read: "Inter Miami today provided an update on the injury to team captain Lionel Messi, sponsored by Baptist Health."
The statement added: "Messi underwent medical tests to assess the extent of the muscle injury he sustained during last night's Leagues Cup match against Necaxa, which forced him to leave the field." The statement confirmed: "The results of the tests revealed that Messi has a minor muscle injury in his right leg. His medical clearance to return will depend on his response to treatment."
