Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma's crisis with Paris Saint-Germain has escalated after negotiations to renew his contract, which expires in the summer of 2026, collapsed. The crisis has now led to his complete exclusion from the first team and his sale value being set at $100 million in the summer transfer window.
A severe financial dispute
According to press reports, Donnarumma's agent, Enzo Raiola, has demanded that the club increase the player's salary, despite him being among the highest-paid players on the team, earning €850,000 per month.
In contrast, the management adhered to the new salary structure imposed by the sporting director over the past two years, which reduced the base salary and increased incentives linked to individual and collective performance.
The French club's management shocked the player and his agent when they decided to "discard" him completely from the team and move on without him, without resorting to negotiations, in a "punitive" approach that sparked controversy.
A touching farewell message
Amid the strained relationship, the Italian national team goalkeeper posted a farewell message on his social media accounts, addressed to Paris Saint-Germain fans, in which he said:
"From the first day I arrived, I gave everything on and off the pitch to earn my place and defend the team. Unfortunately, someone decided I could no longer be part of the group and contribute to the club's success. I hope to be able to say goodbye to the fans at the Parc des Princes, and if not, please know that your support meant the world to me, and I will always cherish your memory."
Addressing his teammates, he added: "You are my second family. Thank you for every game and every moment. Playing for this club and living in this city has been a great honor for me. Thank you, Paris."
UEFA Super Cup Exclusion
Coach Luis Enrique excluded Donnarumma from the squad for Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup final against Tottenham Hotspur, a clear indication of the goalkeeper's imminent departure.
Setting a sale price and signing a replacement. Sky Italia revealed that Paris Saint-Germain has set a price between €20 and €30 million to release Donnarumma during the current transfer window. This comes after already signing French goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier from Lille for €40 million, to be a key replacement next season.
The agent explains the situation. In press statements, Enzo Raiola said: "The boy is deeply sorry for what happened. The last ten days have erased four years Donnarumma spent here. I am shocked by this neglect. The relationship has collapsed."
He added, "The club made various demands during the negotiations, and I will consult with lawyers about the situation. Perhaps only Premier League clubs can meet the club's significant financial demands." He continued, "It's not about abandoning a sporting project, but rather understanding how to deal with the club, even from a public-sector perspective. We must take clear positions."
An Unknown Future
With the ongoing dispute between the two parties, Gianluigi Donnarumma's future remains open to several possibilities, with expectations that the English Premier League will be the Italian goalkeeper's most likely destination, should the clubs there succeed in meeting Paris Saint-Germain's financial conditions.
