President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud closes SNIDC2025, highlighting Somalia progress toward a unified digital ID system and urging nationwide registration.
The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, officially concluded the Second National Identity Conference (SNIDC2025) in Mogadishu, highlighting the progress made in building the country’s unified digital identity system. The two-day conference gathered government institutions, experts, and citizens to assess achievements and outline the next phase of implementing the National ID.
During his remarks, President Hassan Sheikh praised the efforts of the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), acknowledging both the Somali citizens who have already registered and the technical experts supporting the establishment of a modern and secure identity infrastructure. He emphasized that NIRA’s work represents a foundation for future digital governance.
The President stated that the conference reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to creating a unified and reliable National ID system — a key pillar for state-building, national security, and improving public services. He stressed the importance of aligning Somalia’s systems with global standards, especially as the country progresses toward completing its constitution and transitioning to universal suffrage.“In order to prove you are a Somali citizen, you must begin with obtaining the National ID card,” the President said. “It is now easy to acquire, and the time will come when life will not function without it. Somalia cannot remain where it was 35 years ago. We must embrace modern systems and advance in line with international norms.”
President Hassan Sheikh also called upon all government institutions to work collectively in implementing the recommendations outlined during the conference. He stressed the urgent need for every Somali citizen to obtain the National ID, noting that wider registration will enhance public trust in national institutions and strengthen social cohesion.
The President concluded by reaffirming that the National ID initiative is not only a technical reform but a transformative step toward building a modern Somali state capable of delivering efficient, transparent, and inclusive services to its people.
