On Sunday, the President of Somalia, Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, held a meeting with the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas Greenfield, in Mogadishu.
The President briefed the US Ambassador on the achievements of the Somali forces in the war against terrorist groups and the liberation of regions, praising the United States for the great assistance it provides in fighting Al-Shabaab terrorists, pointing to the threat posed by terrorists in the region.
Hassan Sheikh hinted that the arms embargo imposed on Somalia poses a challenge to efforts to rebuild the army and expedite the elimination of terrorism, expressing his hope that the United States will support the Somali government's plan to cancel the embargo, and that it will be part of the Somalia campaign in the UN Security Council.
For her part, Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield announced that her country, through USAID, will provide more than $41 million to fund saving lives and meeting humanitarian needs in Somalia.
“The humanitarian situation in Somalia is as tragic as any situation in the world right now,” the ambassador said during a speech on food security in Mogadishu. a combination of the climate crisis; supply chain crisis triggered by COVID-19; And conflicts - like the one caused by Al-Shabaab, brought that dreadful word back to Somalia - famine.”
She added: “Famine is the ultimate failure of the international community. In a world full of food, entire communities should never die of hunger. "I refuse to accept this failure," she said. “When the longest drought in Somalia’s record led to initial forecasts of famine, the United States took action.” The US ambassador commended the President, government and people of Somalia for fighting against Al-Shabaab and liberating areas from it.
