Minister of Interior: Banadir Province will have an elected administration in June 2024
Ahmed Moalim Faki, Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation in the Somali government, announced that Benadir Region (the capital, Mogadishu) will have an elected administration in June 2024.
The minister indicated that residents of the region's 18 districts will elect their representatives in local councils, and called on residents to overcome land disputes in order to be able to hold the next elections.
It should be noted that Banadir Region, which is the largest Somali region in terms of population, does not have an elected administration, as the federal government appoints the governor of the region and other officials who head the administrations of the directorates affiliated with the region.
The failure to specify the location of the capital, Mogadishu, in the federal system has deprived the residents of the Banadir region of representation in the Senate of the federal parliament, similar to other regions in the country.
