The Puntland government threatens to dissolve the parliament in the state

The Minister of Information in the Puntland government, Mahmoud Aidid Durar, described the decision taken by the state parliament on Thursday to extend his term for a year as illegal. The minister hinted at dissolving the outgoing regional parliament by decree from President Said Abdullah Deni, or by decision of the Constitutional Court, and promised to begin the process of selecting new parliamentarians.

Durar explained that the Puntland government will take legal measures against the members of Parliament if they reject the dissolution resolution to arrest and prosecute them for losing immunity.

A mediation committee of tribal sheikhs from the Khatima administration proposed a general extension of the Puntland parliament, and holding presidential elections on schedule on January 8, 2024, but the state president, Saeed Deni, rejected this, and issued a decision to return to the old electoral system, which stipulates that tribal sheikhs appoint the 66 representatives of parliament. Vice President to elect the next President of Puntland.

Many considered the Puntland government's waiver of the democratic elections that it insisted on holding in Puntland a solution to the political crisis that cast a shadow over the state, but the decision to extend the same, taken by the Puntland Parliament on Thursday, sparked a new crisis in Puntland.
