An Al-Shabaab member surrenders to the national army
Yusuf Hassan Othman, an Al-Shabaab militant, surrendered to command of the Somali National Army's 60th Division at its headquarters in Baidoa, the capital of the interim South West State. The man who was injured indicated that he could not bear the situation in which Al-Shabaab fighters were living, so he decided to surrender to the Somali army.Othman joined Al-Shabaab in 2009 and fought in its ranks in the regions of Bay, Bakool, Mudug, Galgadud, Hiran, and Middle Shabelle. He also fought within Ethiopian and Kenyan territories.
It should be noted that many of the leaders and fighters of the Al-Shabaab movement surrendered in the recent period due to the military pressure they are subjected to from the Somali government forces and the clan militias allied with them.
