The Civil Aviation Authority confirms the safety and security of flights over Somali airspace

On Saturday, the Somali Civil Aviation Authority issued a statement reassuring the people and airlines using Somali airspace that it has full control over the safety and security of flights.

The authority said that there is no security risk in Somali airspace, and indicated that it follows international aviation standards and regulations, and that it works closely with the International Civil Aviation Organization, the International Air Transport Association, and other regional and international partners to ensure the smooth operation of the airspace.

The authority had indicated that it had moved to a new communication device for aircraft flying over Somaliland, replacing the previous system in an attempt to enhance air safety amid rising tensions.

This step came after challenges faced by the authority from separatist Somaliland regarding air authority and communication protocols with aircraft due to the dispute between the Somali government and the separatist Somaliland administration.

The implementation of this new communications device represents an important step in addressing air safety concerns over Somaliland's airspace amid ongoing tensions in the region.

Since 2017, the Somali federal government has been managing the country's airspace, including the airspace of Somaliland, but the recent agreement concluded between Somaliland and Ethiopia sparked a crisis between Mogadishu and Hargeisa that affected the issue of Somali airspace management.
