The World Food Program announces that 6.9 million Somalis will need assistance in 2024
The World Food Program announced in a recently issued report that 6.9 million Somalis are in need of humanitarian aid in 2024. The program indicated that the floods resulting from the El NiƱo phenomenon, the drought that preceded it, and the conflicts led to a rise in food prices and caused food insecurity.
The UN program said it needs US$342.2 million in net funding for all activities for the next six months to expand the humanitarian response in Somalia.
From October to December 2023, Somalia witnessed heavy rains that caused devastating floods, affecting 2.4 million people, displacing one million people, and the floods completely wiped out crops along the Juba and Shabelle rivers.
