The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in the Somali government, Mr. Ahmed Moalim Faki, headed his country’s delegation to participate in the work of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

This session, scheduled for June 6, will include the election of non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. Somalia is scheduled to hold a non-permanent seat on the Security Council from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2026.

Somalia is the only candidate for the seat allocated to the East Africa region, in line with the rotational framework of the African Group. The announcement of Somalia's candidacy dates back to 2018 and was officially approved at the forty-fourth ordinary session of the Executive Council of the African Union in February 2024.

Somalia, which gained its independence and joined the United Nations in 1960, previously held a seat on the Security Council during the period 1971-1972, where it actively contributed to discussions and decisions related to international peace and security.
