The Prime Minister of Somalia, Mr. Hamza Abdi Barre, met with the US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The meeting was held with the aim of deepening the strategic partnership between Somalia and the United States, and security was the cornerstone of the talks that also touched on internal stability and regional and global security issues, and the US Ambassador affirmed her country’s support for Somalia in combating terrorism and strengthening its defense capabilities.

The two sides highlighted the importance of sustainable development projects and increasing US assistance in developing infrastructure, education and health care in Somalia, with the aim of promoting economic growth and stability.

The talks also touched on the potential for U.S. investment in Somalia, which could lead to job creation and economic recovery, vital for a nation recovering from a protracted conflict. Economic partnerships were another focus of the meeting, with a focus on trade relations, debt relief and economic diversification.

Prime Minister Barre expressed Somalia's interest in attracting more American companies to invest in emerging sectors within the country, which could benefit from American expertise in technology, agriculture and renewable energy.

The strategic partnership also looks to enhance cultural exchanges and educational programs between the two countries, and foster deeper understanding and cooperation at the grassroots level. This includes scholarships for Somali students in the United States and initiatives to bring American educational curricula to Somalia.

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield commended Somalia’s recent progress in governance and active engagement in international forums, which she described as steps toward global partnership. Prime Minister Barre acknowledged the longstanding support of the United States and looked forward to a partnership that could play a pivotal role in Somalia’s journey toward stability and prosperity.
