A UN expert calls for support for human rights in Somalia

An independent UN expert called on the international community to continue supporting Somalia to strengthen human rights institutions in the country. She stressed that Somalia's progress towards achieving peace and sustainable development depends largely on respect for human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

In her report submitted to the Human Rights Council, Isha Divan noted that Somalia faces security, social and economic challenges that require continued international support, especially with the worsening effects of climate change and natural disasters.

It also noted the impact of the ongoing conflict between Al-Shabaab and government authorities on civilians, leading to increased violence and displacement. Divan expressed concern about continuing human rights violations, especially against women, children and displaced people.

Despite welcoming some positive steps in the field of human rights, she stressed the need not to ignore the ongoing suffering of the population, and urged the federal government to take concrete measures to protect vulnerable groups.
