The United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia has begun operations, succeeding the previous mission that had been operating in Somalia since 2013. The Transitional Mission will undertake a gradual transition of functions to Somali institutions, the United Nations country team and other stakeholders.

Acting Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Somalia, James Swan, said, “The United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia reaffirms the United Nations’ commitment to the government and people of Somalia in building a stronger state and a better future.” He added: “We look forward to working together as partners throughout this planned two-year transition mission, as Somalia strengthens national ownership and self-reliance.”

The United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia was established following the United Nations Security Council’s adoption of resolution 2753 (2024) on October 30. According to the resolution, the transitional mission will focus on priority areas critical to Somalia’s needs.
