African Union delegation visits Mogadishu to discuss mobilizing resources for new African mission
A high-level African Union delegation led by General Cheick Dembele, Head of the Peace Support Operations Division of the African Union Commission, and Dr. Donald Kaberuka, the African Union High Representative for the African Union Peace Fund, arrived in Mogadishu to discuss the transition from the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) to the African Stabilization Support Mission in Somalia (ASIS).The delegation held talks with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, senior officials from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and international partners. Discussions focused on resource mobilization and the operational framework for the new mission that will succeed the current AMISOM, which is scheduled to take over security support in Somalia by the end of December 2024.
The delegation highlighted the need for financial and logistical support to ensure a smooth transition to the new AU mission and sustain its operations. President Mohamud reiterated Somalia’s commitment to taking full responsibility for its own security while stressing the importance of continued international support. He expressed confidence in the capabilities of the Somali security forces and the role of AU Mission in strengthening these efforts.
With the mandate of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) set to expire on 31 December 2024, the success of the next mission depends on adequate funding and coordination between the Somali government, the AU and international stakeholders.
