Egypt affirms its commitment to the stability and security of Somalia
The Egyptian government affirmed its steadfast support for the sovereignty, unity and stability of Somalia, and its solidarity with the efforts to rebuild the Somali economy and national institutions. A new AU force is scheduled to deploy to Somalia in January 2025 to replace the current mission, which will end its mandate at the end of this year.This came in a speech delivered by Ambassador Ashraf Sweilem, Assistant Foreign Minister for African Affairs, during the ministerial meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council on the situation in Somalia and security arrangements after the end of the current mission of the African Union Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
Ambassador Sweilem, speaking on behalf of Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aati, highlighted Egypt’s deep commitment to assisting Somalia in its transition from the African Union Stabilization Mission to a new AU mission, praising Somalia’s progress in combating terrorism.
He also stressed the need for continued African and international support to ensure a safe and smooth transition of security tasks. He stressed the importance of securing funding for the new mission through mechanisms such as UN Security Council Resolution 2719.
