Egypt and Sudan discuss water security and support for Somalia

The foreign ministers of Egypt and Sudan held talks in Cairo to discuss water security and support for Somalia, with Badr Abdel Aati and Ali Al-Sharif stressing the need to maintain, coordinate and cooperate between the two countries to protect their water security.

Regarding Somalia, the two ministers agreed on the importance of respecting Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity and supporting the Horn of Africa country’s efforts to combat terrorism.

Tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia escalated in January 2024 when Ethiopia signed a deal with the breakaway region of Somaliland, allowing Ethiopia access to its coast on the Gulf of Aden, which Somalia considered a violation of its sovereignty. The two countries recently reached an agreement in Ankara to resolve their dispute, but there are still obstacles to its implementation.
