Somali government praises Burundi's past role in Somalia's security

The Federal Government of Somalia has expressed its sincere gratitude to the Burundian government for the role played by its troops in the African Union Missions (AMISOM) and AMISOM and for their role in enhancing Somalia’s security and combating terrorism.

The Somali Foreign Minister Ahmed Maalim Faki commended the courage and sacrifices of the Burundian army, noting that his country will always be grateful for the legacy left by the Burundian troops. Burundi's troops were the second largest force in the African Union mission in Somalia, with 5,432 Burundian soldiers serving in the country before the gradual drawdown of African forces.

Burundi, which has been a troop contributor to peacekeeping operations in Somalia for 17 years, has announced that its troops will not participate in the African Union operation scheduled to start early next year, due to disagreements with Somalia over the number of Burundian troops allowed to deploy in Somalia.
