Eritrea says it will sever ties with Somalia if it grants Ethiopia sea access
Abdulkadir Idris, the Eritrean Foreign Ministry's advisor on Somalia affairs, said they are concerned about the agreement signed by the Somali government with Ethiopia. Abdulkadir revealed the ambiguity surrounding the agreement signed in Ankara by President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to end the dispute between the two countries. He said: "There was no special agreement between the Eritrean government and Somalia. The last agreement between Somalia, Eritrea and Egypt was to protect Somalia from Ethiopia, which invaded Somali waters."
The advisor pointed out that his country had never expected the Somali government to enter into such an agreement, and explained that Asmara would reconsider its relations with Somalia if it agreed to provide a waterway to the Ethiopian government, which he said posed a threat to Eritrea's security and stability.
The Eritrean official ruled out sending troops to Somalia, and stated that Asmara provides training and advice to the Somali National Army, noting that his country had been subject to sanctions only 20 years ago for accusing it of supporting terrorist groups in Somalia.
