Egypt officially announces its participation in the new African peacekeeping force in Somalia
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aati announced on Monday that his country will participate in the new African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia, which is expected to deploy in January 2025.Abdel Aati said in a joint press conference with his Somali counterpart Ahmed Maalim Faqi in Cairo that “Egypt decided to participate in this mission based on a request from the Somali government, and based on a welcome from the African Union Peace and Security Council.”
Abdel-Ati stressed that Egypt supports “the extension of the state’s authority and sovereignty over the entire Somali national territory and the complete rejection of any dictates or unilateral measures that affect the unity, sovereignty and integrity of Somalia.”
His statements come before the current mission, known as “ATMIS,” ends at the end of this year, to be replaced by the new African Union Mission to Support Stabilization in Somalia (AUSOM). The Egyptian foreign minister did not specify the number of Egyptian troops in the mission.
