The Egyptian government has confirmed its rejection of any military presence of a landlocked country in the Red Sea, in reference to Ethiopia, following a meeting on Saturday between the foreign ministers of Egypt, Somalia and Eritrea in Cairo. Abdel-Ati thanked Somalia and Eritrea for their support for the Egyptian candidate for the post of UNESCO Director-General.Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aati stressed in a press conference with his Somali counterpart Ahmed Moallem Faqi and Eritrean counterpart Osman Saleh that the three countries agreed to support the unity and sovereignty of Somalia and to provide all support from Egypt and Eritrea to Somalia to extend its control over the entire Somali territory.
The meeting of the foreign ministers of Egypt, Somalia and Eritrea coincided with a visit that Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud was making on the same day to Addis Ababa to continue the agreement he reached with the Ethiopian Prime Minister last month and work to normalize relations between the two countries, which were strained at the beginning of last year due to the memorandum of understanding that Addis Ababa concluded with the breakaway region of Somaliland.
