The UAE is entering the era of BWRX-300 mini nuclear reactors

Emirates Nuclear Energy Company and GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy signed an agreement on the sidelines of the World Utilities Conference in Abu Dhabi, to jointly evaluate the deployment and use of the BWRX-300 mini-reactor technology.

This step enhances cooperation between the two sides, and is based on the agreement signed between them in 2023 on the sidelines of the Conference of the Parties (COP 28), to evaluate this technology within the framework of the “Advanced Program for Nuclear Energy Technologies” launched by the Emirates Nuclear Energy Company.

This cooperation comes in light of the growing global awareness that nuclear energy is the ideal solution to meet the current unprecedented demand for reliable, carbon-free energy from computers with huge capacity in data centers, and to support growth in the artificial intelligence and technology sectors.

The agreement was signed by Mohammed Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of Emirates Nuclear Energy Company, and Mavi Zingoni, CEO of the Energy Sector at GE Vernova.

The agreement includes cooperation in exploring opportunities to deploy mini-reactors in the world, and developing a plan for this that includes identifying locations, licensing paths, investment and marketing strategies, in addition to developing the supply chain.

Mohammed Al Hammadi said: “As we continue to provide energy around the clock to the UAE, we are moving to a new phase that includes a new level of cooperation with General Electric Vernova Hitachi, to accelerate the deployment of new advanced nuclear reactor technologies, both in the country and in various parts of the world.”
