Somalia to host East African Standby Force policy meeting in July

Mogadishu – The Federal Ministry of Defense of Somalia announced that it will host the East African Standby Force (EASF) Core Policy Meeting in Mogadishu from July 15 to 19, 2025.

The meeting is expected to bring together senior security and defense officials from the force's member states to discuss regional security cooperation and counterterrorism efforts.

According to defense sources, the agenda is likely to include coordination against common threats such as Al-Shabaab and the Islamic State (ISIS), as well as discussions on funding and operational synergies within the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

This is the first time Somalia has hosted such a high-level meeting of the East African Standby Force, indicating growing confidence in Mogadishu's security capabilities and its role in shaping regional security policies. A defense ministry source said, "The Somali government sees this as an opportunity to strengthen regional security cooperation."

The East African Standby Force is a regional security mechanism designed to respond to crises within member states, and Somalia's hosting of the policy forum comes as it seeks to transition from reliance on international forces to assuming full responsibility for national and regional security.

The Mogadishu meeting is expected to assess the feasibility of new financing models to support counterterrorism efforts beyond 2025 and promote stability in the Horn of Africa region.
