Moroccan football legend dies after illness

Moroccan football legend Ahmed Faras passed away on Wednesday evening at the age of 78 after a long illness.

The deceased is considered one of the most prominent figures in Moroccan football history, having led the Moroccan national team to the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations title.

Faras was the first Moroccan and Arab to win the African Golden Ball in 1975.

He is considered one of the architects of Moroccan football's glory, as he still holds the title of the Atlas Lions' all-time top scorer with 42 goals.

He was one of the brightest talents in African football in the 1970s. Despite his young age, he led his country to three Africa Cup of Nations finals and helped them qualify for the 1972 Munich Olympics. He also appeared in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.

Ahmed Faras, nicknamed "The Football Boy," was born in 1946 in Mohammedia. He began his football career with the Chabab Mohammedia team, to which he remained loyal throughout his sporting career, which ended in 1982.
