Welshman Ramsey announces his retirement from football
Former Wales captain Aaron Ramsey has ended his football career at the age of 35, after a career that included winning five trophies with Arsenal, he announced on Tuesday. Ramsey wrote on his Instagram account: "This was not an easy decision. After much thought, I have decided to retire from football."He accompanied his message with a picture of himself wearing the number 10 Wales jersey he wore at Euro 2016 in France, where Ramsey, along with fellow former Wales captain Gareth Bale, reached the semi-finals before losing to Portugal – Wales' best-ever finish in a major tournament.
The player, who has 86 international caps and 21 goals, and who also participated in Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup, said: "It was an honor to wear the Welsh jersey and experience all those wonderful moments with it." He added: "Thank you to all the clubs I've been fortunate enough to play for. Thank you to all the coaches and staff who allowed me to achieve my dream and play at the highest level."
At club level, the Welshman left Cardiff early for London, where he played for Arsenal and enjoyed the best years of his career between 2008 and 2019, winning the FA Cup three times (2014, 2015, and 2017). While he failed to win the Premier League title, Ramsey did win the Italian league title with Juventus in 2020. After stints with Rangers in Scotland and Nice in France, followed by a return to his boyhood club Cardiff City, his last experience was in Mexico with Pumas.
