Deputy Prime Minister congratulates Italy on its National Day
Deputy Prime Minister Saleh Ahmed Jama congratulated the Italian government and people on the occasion of Italy's National Day during a reception held by the Italian Embassy in Mogadishu. During the reception, Jama emphasized the deep historical ties and bonds of friendship between Somalia and Italy, praising the level of cooperation between the two countries in various fields.The Deputy Prime Minister noted that Italy's National Day is a significant national occasion in modern Italian history, commemorating the 1946 referendum in which Italians chose to transition to a republican system instead of continuing the monarchy.
He said: “This occasion commemorates the 1946 referendum when the Italian people chose to become a republic instead of remaining a monarchy. On this occasion, I extend, on behalf of the government of the Federal Republic of Somalia, my sincerest congratulations to the Italian people and their leadership.”
He added that Somalia and Italy share long-standing historical ties, emphasizing the Somali government’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation and developing the partnership between the two countries in a way that serves their mutual interests.
Italian Republic Day is celebrated on June 2nd each year, commemorating the referendum that ended the monarchy and established the republican system in the country. Somalia and Italy maintain close relations that extend back decades, encompassing areas of political, economic and developmental cooperation, in addition to Rome's support for reconstruction efforts and state-building in Somalia.
