Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud arrived in Uganda on Saturday for an official visit, in an attempt to garner more regional support for his efforts to fight terrorism. The Somali presidency said that President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud arrived in Kampala to join the government and people of Uganda before the celebrations of the sixtieth anniversary of its independence.

The presidency added that (during the visit, the Somali president will hold talks with his Ugandan counterpart, His Excellency KagutaMuseni, on strengthening bilateral relations in all fields, especially the fight against terrorism. Informed sources said that President Sheikh Mahmoud will ask his Ugandan counterpart Museveni to support Somalia's efforts in the war on terrorism, which he announced against the terrorist Al-Shabab movement.

During his visit, Sheikh Mahmoud will participate in the Ugandan National Independence Day celebrations this week, which will last for at least 3 days. The visit to Uganda is the second for the Somali president since he took office last May.

During the last visit last August, the two presidents agreed to strengthen a security and economic partnership to develop trade and investment relations and to exchange common interests. Uganda has a large presence within the African peacekeeping forces in Somalia, amounting to about 5,000 soldiers. It arrived in Mogadishu in early 2007, and contributed to the liberation of the capital from the terrorist Al-Shabab movement in 2011.
