Sunni scholars warn against calls to negotiate with Al-Shabaab

Scholars from the Sunnis and the group expressed their support for the war against the Al-Shabaab movement led by the Somali government and warned against calls to negotiate with the group before it disarms and abandons extremist ideology.

The scholars who concluded their meeting in the capital, Mogadishu, on Monday, October 23, 2023, indicated in the closing statement of the meeting that they stand by the Somali armed forces and the militias allied with them, and promised to form a committee that will work to organize and support efforts aimed at liberating the country from the Kharijites.

The scholars expressed their willingness to be at the forefront of combating extremist thought and to support the Somali government in this, pointing to their reinforcement of the fatwas issued by Sunni sheikhs in the years 2008, 2009 and 2010, in which they affirmed that the Al-Shabaab movement and its like are Kharijites and that fighting them is a duty until its fighters lay down arms and repent of extremist thought. .

The scholars called for not politicizing the war against the Kharijites, preserving the unity of the nation, and staying away from everything that poses a threat to the stability of the country, as well as from everything that gives the Kharijites an opportunity to stir up problems. They called for caution against the strife raised by the Al-Shabaab movement among the Somali tribes.

In their statement, the scholars affirmed their full support for the Palestinian cause, and pointed out that liberating Jerusalem is the duty of every Muslim. Former officials, including the former Ministers of Endowments and Religious Affairs, Sheikh Omar Ali Robli and Sheikh Abdul Qadir Baghdadi, and prominent religious scholars participated in the meeting of Sunni scholars.
