The Somali president dismisses the president of the National University and appoints his replacement as acting president

The Somali president

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud decided to dismiss Dr. Hassan Omar from the position of President of the Somali National University and appointed Dr. Hassan Osman Gaal as Acting President of the University.

The Somali Minister of Education, Farah Sheikh Abdul Qadir, assigned the heads of university offices to work with the acting president of the university during the transitional period until the new university president is chosen.

It is not clear the reason behind the dismissal, but the decision came days after the head of the College of Social Affairs, Department of Journalism, defected and joined the Al-Shabaab movement.

After its closure in 1990 due to the collapse of the previous military regime led by the late General Mohamed Siad Barre, the university, which was founded in 1971, was reopened in August 2014.
