The United Nations has taken proactive measures to address the expected impact of El Niño rains in Somalia by allocating $15 million to flood response efforts. This step comes in response to the warning of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) of the potential devastating effects of these rains.
The allocated funds will be directed primarily towards vulnerable areas in Hirshabelle and Jubbaland states that have a history of suffering from the severe consequences of floods. These areas are expected to face the highest risk of riverine flooding according to the latest humanitarian report from the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) stated that more than 1.2 million people living in riverine areas are at high risk of flooding, warning that up to 1.5 million hectares of land could be submerged if rains follow the expected pattern.
The United Nations said that the allocation of the amount confirms its commitment to protecting vulnerable populations in Somalia during the rainy season (October-December), when the impact of the El Niño phenomenon is expected to be more evident.
