A Somali engineer residing in the city of “Ado” in central Somalia manufactured a cooking device that runs on used automobile oil with the aim of combating desertification caused by the use of charcoal.

Abdel Wali Nour Halni indicated that he manufactured the aforementioned cooking device to end dependence on coal, and he called his project “Save the Trees.” He explained how to use the device he invented and described its use in homes as safe.

Halni stated that local residents had placed orders for the new device, noting that those who used it did not report any safety problems. It is noteworthy that Somalis use charcoal for cooking on a large scale, which threatens the environment, especially since Somalia is one of the countries most affected by climate change.
