The United States announced the appointment of Richard Reilly as a new ambassador to Somalia, and he is scheduled to assume his official duties soon. Reilly is the fourth ambassador appointed by the United States to Somalia since the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2013.

The new ambassador will succeed former US Ambassador Larry Andre, who served as ambassador for one year, and Reilly expressed confidence in his ability to handle his responsibilities.

The new American ambassador affirmed his commitment to working closely with various American entities, including the United States Army, the United States Agency for International Development, and other organizations involved in the fight against international terrorism.

It should be noted that diplomatic relations between the United States and Somalia were restored in 2013, after a period of instability and a long civil war in the country. Ambassador Stephen Schwartz became the first US Ambassador to Somalia in June 2016, and was succeeded by Donald Yamamoto in October 2018. Larry Andre assumed the position in February 2022 and held it until July 2023.
