The Security Council renews the mandate of the UN mission in Somalia
The UN Security Council on Tuesday adopted a resolution to extend the mandate of the United Nations Somali State and Peacebuilding Support Mission (UNSOM) for one year, until October 31, 2024.
Resolution 2705, unanimously approved by the 15-member Council, requests UNSOM to continue to maintain and strengthen its presence throughout Somalia in consultation with the Somali Government and Federal Member States and to further strengthen its cooperation with Somalia and the African Union.
The United Nations Assistance Mission to Somalia (UNSOM) was established in June 2013 by the Security Council to support state-building and peace-building in Somalia, which the Somali people need so much in the recent period due to the war with the terrorist Al-Shabaab movement.
