On Saturday, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Somalia, Catriona Laing, visited the state of Puntland, located in the northeast of the country.

In Growi, the state capital, Ling met with the President of Puntland, Said Abdullahi Deni, and officials from his regional government. She also met with opposition leaders and various sectors of society, and discussed with them the issues of the upcoming elections in Puntland, the humanitarian situation in the Sool region, and the effects of El Nino rains on the regions of Puntland.

The international official praised the achievements made by the Puntland administration in the field of democracy, called for peaceful elections that were approved by everyone, and called for an end to the conflict in the Sool region. She also stressed the importance of improving relations between the federal government and the state of Puntland.

It should be noted that the state of Puntland is witnessing sharp disputes between political stakeholders in the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections, which has raised fears that the disputes will develop into armed confrontations. The visit of the United Nations envoy to Puntland is considered part of the efforts made to prevent the situation from erupting in the state.
