The United Nations suspends the withdrawal of African forces from Somalia for three months

The United Nations Security Council suspended the withdrawal of troops from the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) from the country for three months. This decision comes in the wake of a request from Somalia for African forces to remain in the country to help in the fight against Al-Shabaab.

Somalia's request received the support of the African Union, and all countries that contribute troops to the Union mission, as they agreed to delay the withdrawal of African Union forces for 90 days. It should be noted that the United Nations is holding talks with Somalia and the African Union Mission to ensure the success of the security transition process.

UN Assistant Secretary-General for Africa, Martha Bobbie, who visited Somalia, said that international organizations will ensure that the Somali security forces are able to fully assume security responsibility, adding that African forces will gradually withdraw from Somalia without compromising the gains achieved in Somalia's security.
