The United Nations affirms its respect for Somalia's sovereignty and territorial integrity

President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, in a telephone call with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, on Wednesday, discussed the situation in the region and Ethiopia’s assault on the independence and sovereignty of Somalia.

A statement published on the Somali Presidency's Facebook website indicated that the President explained to the Secretary-General the Somali government's policy based on good neighbourliness, cooperation and mutual respect, stressing at the same time that the Somali government and people will not accept violations of the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

For his part, spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, said: “Guterres took into account Somalia’s concerns regarding the agreement of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and Somaliland that was announced on January 1.”

He pointed out that the Secretary-General reiterated that the Security Council has consistently expressed its respect for Somalia's independence, territorial integrity and unity, and that he urged all parties to conduct an effective peace dialogue to avoid any action that might lead to aggravation of the situation.

The Somali government had rejected a memorandum of understanding signed by Ethiopia with the Somaliland administration regarding granting a naval military base to Ethiopian forces. The Somali government considered this a violation of its sovereignty, and countries and organizations have expressed their respect for Somalia’s independence and territorial integrity.
