The Special Representative of the African Union in Somalia, Ambassador Mohamed El Amin Soueif, indicated that the Union is considering sending a follow-up mission to Somalia after the completion of the withdrawal of AMISOM soldiers at the end of last year.

Suef explained during a visit to the town of “Dubli” in the state of Jubbaland in the far south of Somalia to enhance operations to support the ongoing peace efforts and boost the morale of the African forces stationed in the state that Somalia’s official request to send a follow-up mission confirms the need for continued international support to achieve stability in the region.

The African Union representative praised the Kenya Defense Forces of the African Transitional Mission in Somalia and urged them to remain vigilant against Al-Shabaab.

He also praised those forces for preparing the Somali security forces to take over security responsibilities from the African Union Mission, saying: “We are proud of the good work you are doing in weakening Al-Shabaab,” and added, “I commend you for the sacrifice and professionalism that contributed and continues the march towards achieving peace and stability in Somalia.” .

The African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia is preparing to withdraw 4,000 additional soldiers after it withdrew 5,000 soldiers in the first and second phases, provided that it will complete the withdrawal at the end of the current year 2024 in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.
