The Somali President announces that his priority is to eliminate Al-Shabaab

On Thursday, President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud participated in the graduation ceremony of a new batch of Somali special forces known as “Gur Gur,” which received training at the “Turki Sum” military base in Mogadishu.

In his speech on the occasion, the President indicated that his priority is to reform the army, eliminate Al-Shabaab and restore law and order in the entire country before his term ends in 2026.

“Many areas that were under the control of terrorists for a long time are free today,” the president said. He added: “Citizens live with honor and dignity.” The President noted that Somalia does not want to face the threat of Al-Shabaab for any longer, and called on the Somali people to unite against the group linked to Al-Qaeda.

In conclusion, President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud thanked the Turkish government for its role in rebuilding the Somali Armed Forces. It is noteworthy that President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, after his election as President of the Republic in May 2022, led a major military campaign against Al-Shabaab, which achieved significant progress in the states of Hirshabelle and Galmudug, but the group still controls areas of the two states in addition to large lands in southern Somalia.
