Results of the National Advisory Council meeting

The meeting of the National Advisory Council, which includes the leadership of the federal government, state leaders and the governor of Banadir Province, which was held in the capital, Mogadishu, from May 14-17, 2024, concluded after four days of discussions on the political and security situations in the country.

The final statement of the meeting indicated that the Council agreed on four items: strengthening security, combating Al-Shabaab, completing the review of the constitution, and strengthening democracy and humanitarian issues.

The Council also supported the efforts of the federal government to accelerate the transitional plan and the efforts made for the Somali Armed Forces to assume responsibility for the country’s security after the withdrawal of the forces of the African Union Transitional Mission “ATMIS”, which is expected to completely withdraw from the country at the end of this year.

It is worth noting that the state of Puntland did not participate in the meeting of the National Advisory Council, as it had previously announced the severing of its relations with the Somali federal government, and repeatedly confirmed that it was not part of the decisions issued by the Council.
