The Prime Minister of the Government of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hamza Abdi Barre, pointed out the importance of developing the capabilities of the Somali Coast Guard, to enable them to assume public security and defend the Somali sea.

The Prime Minister, who watched a maneuver presented by forces trained to protect the Somali coast, praised the European Union for the training and high skills it provided to those forces prepared to assume the security of the Somali coast.

The Prime Minister, who was speaking with the officers of Operation Atlanta on board a ship stationed on the coast of Somalia, thanked them for their important support in protecting the country’s shores from criminals who carry out illegal activities.

Barre said: “Since 2008, Operation Atlanta has been the basis for enhancing comprehensive safety and security in the Somali Sea, which was essential in preventing piracy, ensuring the safety of ships, and combating illegal fishing and crimes at sea.”

The Prime Minister pointed out the commitment of the Somali federal government to building a Somali army capable of protecting the country's coasts, to prevent any party seeking to attack those coasts. Operation “Atlanta” is a military operation carried out by a European Union naval force since 2008 with the aim of combating piracy off the coast of Somalia.
