The UN Security Council holds a meeting on Somalia

 Today, the UN Security Council will hold an open briefing followed by closed consultations on the situation in Somalia. On June 6, the United Nations General Assembly elected Somalia as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for the period 2025-2026, representing the East African region.

During the session, the Acting Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Somalia, James Swan, and the African Union Envoy to Somalia and Head of the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), Mohamed El Amin Soueif, will present.

Swan, who previously served as Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia between 2019 and 2022, is scheduled to address the latest political, economic and security developments in Somalia based on the Secretary-General’s latest report on the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia, which was published on June 3 and covers the period from January 25. Until May 25, 2024.

On March 30, Somalia's bicameral federal parliament approved controversial amendments to the first four chapters of the interim constitution aimed at holding “one person, one vote” elections, replacing the clan formula traditionally used to organize Somali elections.
