On Saturday, the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, opened the fifth session of the Eleventh Federal Parliament. The President stressed the crucial importance of finalizing the interim constitution, describing it as a step towards good governance and democracy.

The President delivered a speech before members of the People's and Senate Houses of Parliament in which he addressed major national issues, highlighting the ongoing stability programs in the liberated areas, the importance of completing the interim constitution, and the government's position on the war on Al-Shabaab.

The President referred to the launch of stabilization programs in areas recently liberated from terrorist control, with the aim of enhancing the provision of basic public services, restoring normal life, and improving the quality of life for residents of these areas.

The President praised the efforts of Parliament in approving the four chapters of the Constitution that were amended in its previous session, and said: “The task of finalizing the Constitution opens the way for Somali citizens to have the right to vote or run for elections.”

In his speech, Sheikh Mahmoud touched on the ongoing conflict with Al-Shabaab, and reiterated that the government is not participating in talks with the group, explaining that instead, it continues to focus on its military efforts to fight it.

The President urged the federal and regional state governments to mediate between the warring clans and take decisive action against those inciting violence, and stressed the importance of unity and cooperation in addressing these internal conflicts that continue to threaten the stability and security of the nation.
