Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre inaugurates the first national blood bank in Mogadishu

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre officially opened the National Blood Bank in Mogadishu on Sunday. The facility, which has been fully operational, aims to play a critical role in saving lives across the country.

Prime Minister Barre registered as a blood donor and personally donated blood. The new National Blood Bank will significantly enhance Somalia’s ability to respond to medical emergencies, especially in the wake of terrorist attacks and other crises.

The establishment of the National Blood Bank comes at a time when Somalia has witnessed countless acts of resilience and solidarity from its citizens, especially its youth. In the face of repeated terrorist attacks and bomb attacks in Mogadishu, young Somalis have consistently lined up to donate blood to help the wounded, often at the most critical moments.

Prime Minister Berri highlighted the crucial role the National Blood Bank will play in the country’s healthcare infrastructure. “This facility will not only save lives, but will also symbolize the unity and resilience of our people in times of crisis,” he said during the inauguration.

The National Blood Bank will store and manage blood donations, facilitating the provision of vital supplies to hospitals and clinics across the country. In a country where healthcare infrastructure has been severely impacted by years of conflict, this new facility represents an important step towards building a more robust emergency response system.
