President Hassan Sheikh reaffirms commitment to direct elections

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has announced plans to hold one-man elections, describing the initiative as crucial to the country’s future. The Somali president also highlighted Madobe’s failure to extend his control beyond Kismayo, the capital of Jubaland, and liberate conflict zones within the state.

Mohamud has strongly criticised Ahmed Madobe, the president of Jubaland state, accusing him of maintaining power for 13 years through undemocratic means. He said Madobe had promised democratic elections but instead organised indirect voting that excluded many participants.

Mohamud called for national unity and urged citizens to prepare for a transparent electoral process, saying: “We are ready to work with everyone to make the principle of single-vote a reality.” The president stressed that Somalia’s progress will not be halted by individual seizure of power, and pledged to promote unity, equality and comprehensive national development.
