Federal delegation reaches agreement to transfer security of Baladweyne city to Somali government forces
A federal government delegation led by the Chief of Army Staff, Odawa Yusuf Raji and the Director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency, Abdullahi Mohammed Ali Sanbalushi, has reached an agreement with Hawadley clan leaders to transfer control of security in Baladweyne to federal forces. The delegation, which met with traditional elders, intellectuals, youths and elders, stressed the need for federal oversight to restore stability and strengthen governance in the town, which has long faced security challenges.
Sanbalushi appealed directly to the clan leaders, urging them to entrust the government with the safety of the city, while the Minister of Petroleum and Minerals, Taher Sheri Mohamed, stressed that “the current situation in Baladweyne is unsustainable. Government centers must be cleansed, and armed groups must be unified to pave the way for lasting peace and improved services. Security must precede a political solution.”
Gen. Odawa Yusuf Rage, commander of the Somali National Army, reminded the Hawadle clan of their historic role in resisting the Al-Shabaab insurgency. “You are known for your resilience and sacrifice for this nation. This fight must now translate into a unified effort to stabilize Beledweyne. Prolonged insecurity only hinders progress.”
The decision comes amid ongoing conflicts between local security forces, forces loyal to the Hirshabelle and Hiran state administrations, and other clan factions vying for control of the city. These rivalries have contributed to insecurity, including looting and the proliferation of illegal checkpoints.
The federal government is calling for an end to this type of instability as part of its broader strategy to establish security and good governance across the country. But the success of the initiative will depend on sustained cooperation with local communities and leaders.
