Somali Information Minister Meets UN Envoy

 Somalia’s Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Daud Aweys Jama, met with the Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia, James Swan, in his office on Monday. During the meeting, the two officials discussed the vital role of the national media in shaping key national agendas, including the ongoing fight against terrorist groups, national reconciliation efforts, elections, and other priority issues facing Somalia.

The Minister and Swan also reviewed the progress made by the Federal Government of Somalia in improving national security. They particularly highlighted the readiness of the Somali security forces to take over security operations in the country once the African Union Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) concludes its mission.

Minister Jammeh shared with Swan the important steps taken in the constitutional review process and preparations for the elections expected to take place in 2025 and 2026. James Swan commended the achievements of the Somali government, expressing the continued commitment of the United Nations to support Somalia. He reiterated the United Nations’ commitment to strengthening cooperation and coordination with Somalia in the coming years.

The meeting also included a visit to the National Media Archive, where the Minister and Ambassador toured the central media storage facilities. In conclusion, the Minister of Information expressed his gratitude to the United Nations for its longstanding support to Somalia over the past 30 years, emphasizing the critical role this assistance has played in rebuilding governance and infrastructure in the country.
