Somaliland affirms its commitment to protecting freedom of expression
The Somaliland government has pledged to strengthen its commitment to freedom of expression, and has pledged to protect journalists and citizens from arrest for views or facts deemed unfavorable by the government.Information Minister Ahmed Yassin Sheikh Ali stressed that freedom of expression is the cornerstone of Somaliland's governance, noting that no one will be imprisoned for their opinions provided they do not violate the law. He explained that his administration aspires to establish a society where the rule of law prevails and fundamental freedoms are protected.
The breakaway region held internationally acclaimed democratic elections on November 13, and the president-elect, Abdirahman Arow, and his administration are seeking to ensure freedoms to cement Somaliland's reputation as a beacon of democracy in the Horn of Africa.
